Curious Bunny Mural Chicago
Curious Bunny Mural by Chicago Muralist and Illustrator Cheri Lee Charlton.
"Curious Bunny," the second-largest mural in the city of Chicago and the largest mural ever painted by a woman, as documented in the Chicago Mural Registry. Measuring an impressive 119 x 98 feet, on north side of the Columbia College Chicago Student Center at 754 S. Wabash Ave., in the heart of the South Loop.
"Curious Bunny" mural is a signature example of my illustration style, combining organic and dynamic line work, vibrant colors, and vintage-inspired patterns into a fusion of artistry, symbolism, and storytelling. The mural took 15 days to complete during the summer of 2024. I was assisted by three assistants: Jay Meyers, Jesse Navarrete, and Jasmina Amalya.
The project was managed by Abie Vasquez and sponsored by Columbia College Chicago, Behr Paint, The Home Depot, and Wooster Brush Company.
"Curious Bunny" draws inspiration from my affection for animals, particularly rabbits, and serves as a heartfelt tribute to Beatrix Potter, an early female pioneer in the history of illustration. Rabbits have lent themselves to many great metaphors or symbolic themes throughout history. I felt this mural concept was perfect for Columbia College because I could allow the rabbit to represent the curiosity and drive I have seen in so many of my students over the years. The bunny is surrounded by thorn bushes and in an active pose, representing the intelligence, hard work, and resourcefulness it takes to conquer the challenges life may present, all while finding joy, life lessons, and rewards in the exploration of the more challenging paths we take.
This mural, hand-painted with a blend of exterior latex and spray paint, is a significant addition to the Wabash Arts Corridor, further cementing Columbia College Chicago’s reputation as a hub for creative expression and public art in the city.
The "Curious Bunny" mural is more than just a work of art; it is a symbol of perseverance, creativity, and the enduring spirit of exploration that defines Columbia College Chicago and its students.
